In 1830, the Escary family, ascendants of the current owners, the Fournier family, were already growing vines on tiny plots of land perched on the hillsides around Montarnaud. The land was cleared by hand and dry stone walls were built to retain the soil. Even today you can still see signs of the painstaking work carried out by this generation throughout the area. This meagre production was mainly for family consumption and although the wine wasn't the finest it was already part of a certain art of living.
In the 1900s our great grandfathers, always eager to adopt new methods to improve their results, used horses as a precious aid in their hard manual work. The vines were also brought down onto the plains making them easier to cultivate and much more productive. This period of increased wine production in southern France was in answer to increased demand from the population with wine becoming considered a food supplement.
From this time right up to the 1980s our grandparents and parents, with total respect for nature, perpetuated this land's history.
In 1978, Jacky Fournier took over the five generation family estate. He replanted vines on the very hillsides where family's vine growing vocation had taken root. The discovery of an exceptional parcel of land in an area that had never previously been cultivated plus the family experience and skills were the combination that brought Domaine d'Escary to life.
In 2004 Jacky Fournier was join by Nicolas Fournier, his nephew. The dynamism of this team of two generations combines, authenticity and novation with the same motivation to create wines of quality, original wines, impressed wines of a signature.
